Overview

Kanishka is recruiting for an ambitious, impact-focused parliamentary assistant whose central focus will be (i) radically improving life for residents of the Vale of Glamorgan, and (ii) materially contributing to national policy outcomes on AI, online safety and technology more broadly.

There is no requirement to have worked in politics (or, indeed, to have worked before). A mindset of agency, effort, personal growth and delivering outcomes will be valued much more than the directness of political and wider work experience. You will spend most days directly with our small (3-4 person) parliamentary team, learning together from the frontline of British politics.

Applicants who require particular flexibility of employment pattern are encouraged, as are those who feel suited to and excited for this role but may not fit the written specifications.

Team Ethos
  • We are one team. Westminster team members need to be deeply committed to issues in the Vale, and colleagues based in the Vale need to have opportunities to explore issues in Westminster.
  • We have a shared obsession with impact. We want to make the Vale and Britain even more exciting, compelling places to live in, and we think public policy and politics is a great way of making that a reality.
  • We are a community. We are a small group, but we actively invest in building a network around us who can engage and contribute as needed.
  • We want a high agency, high ownership and high ambition culture, built on shared commitment and psychological safety.
Candidate Attributes
  • Intellectual firepower: if you are fired up by public policy, and bring sharpness and originality of thought to it, you will enjoy this role and thrive in it.
  • Grit to get things done: you will need a super low-ego attitude to rolling up your sleeves and reliably getting things done, even when they are not exciting tasks.
  • Proactivity: this will only work if you take the initiative to figure out the best way to achieve our shared goals, and then deliver. This includes proactive idea generation and raising productive disagreements with others.
  • Political judgement: you will be working in politics - you will need discretion to guard and build the team’s reputation and trust at all times.
  • Operational excellence: you will be responsible for getting details right, and inevitably dealing with logistical complications, with a relentless focus on delivering outcomes.
Core Responsibilities
Parliamentary Business
  • Support Vale representation in Parliament: Seek out and deliver on opportunities for Vale residents to engage in parliamentary business e.g. through tours for community groups.
  • Support to the DSIT Ministerial team: Provide operational and strategic support to Kanishka in his capacity as Minister for AI and Online Safety. This may include coordinating with ministerial colleagues and staff, assisting with the delivery of DSIT-related parliamentary business, and preparing public communications about DSIT work.
  • Policy correspondence: Prepare high-quality, timely written correspondence in response to policy enquiries from constituents, stakeholders, and campaign groups on a range of topics.
  • Projects: Over time, you will have the opportunity to propose and lead strategic projects that align with the office’s values and priorities. These projects may vary in nature, but will all require initiative, rigour, and a focus on measurable outcomes.
Communications
  • Media engagement: Assist in managing relationships with local and national media. You will support the drafting and pitching of press releases and opinion pieces, manage reactive lines, and help maintain a consistent and professional media profile.
  • Social media presence: Support the development of a consistent and impactful online presence. You will contribute to the drafting, scheduling, and monitoring of posts across platforms, ensuring alignment with broader political and policy priorities.
  • Basic video production: Assist, where necessary, in the preparation of short video clips for use across digital platforms, including parliamentary clips and local visit footage.
  • Innovation: As the media landscape shifts, so should our communications. You will be encouraged to stay abreast of such developments, and spot opportunities for impact.
